A big reason why the Gumby series became famous was because it addressed many classic literary works. It provided information available in books about the world around us by using the creative approach of having Gumby and Pokey literally enter books and explore new worlds.

Anyone would want to have the experiences that Gumby has had: sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner with the Indians; crossing the Delaware with George Washington; calling upon the Indian Rain Spirits; or going to the moon in a space ship.

As spokescharacters for The Center For The Book of the Library of Congress, Gumby and Pokey went to work on increasing literacy in the US from 1994 to 1995, in the "Shape Your Future - Read!" campaign. Their message was that books can change your life by providing you with information that makes you think in new ways, and gives you the power to accomplish new goals.
